The segregation of Chamaeleon Cass., Dict. Sci. Nat., ed. 2. [F. Cuvier] 47: 509. (1827) sensu Petit (1987 & 1997) from Carlina L., Sp. Pl. 2: 828. 1753. Gen. Pl. ed. 5, 360.(1754) is a taxonomic opinion accepted by Hassler (2018) and Wahrmund et al. (2010). However, the opposite opinion that of the synonymy under Carlina, is accepted by Greuter (2003) based upon an option put forward by Garcia-Jacas et al. (2002) and this is maintained pro parte by both Euro-Med (2018) and GCC (2018). However, Chamaeleon cuneatus (Boiss.) M. Dittrich, Boissiera, 51: 74. (1996) is accepted by Hassler (2018), but is not covered by Euro+Med (2018), as it is not found in the area covered by their database. In addition, this combination is ambiguous in GCC (2018), as it is shown as a double synonym with Atractylis cuneata. There are other inconsistencies in the secondary literature, for example with Chamaeleon macrocephalus and C. macrophyllus. Therefore, it seems that this taxon page should be maintained for now.
