Generic circumscription
[edit]Aristolochia s.l. is monophyletic, but a number of botanists propose that it be dismantled in favour of at least 4 segregates. The first of the proposed segregates is a resurrected Isotrema Raf., Amer. Monthly Mag. & Crit. Rev. 4(3): 195. (1819) (Zhu et al., 2019). However, this has not been accepted by all authorities, as it may be superfluous, symptomatic of a move to genus inflation and at the moment is only part of an incomplete project. WS has to adopt a conservative approach until consensus is more or less accepted (Govaerts et al. 2022). Andyboorman (talk) 17:31, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
- Please do not unilaterally create segregates from Aristolochia s.l. without at least going to the pump, as they could be reverted or dismantled. There is already a number of orphan Isotrema species that will need to be evaluated and possibly moved. Thanks Andyboorman (talk) 17:37, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
- Given that it has been nearly five years since a small group of Chinese botanists proposed dismantling monophyletic Aristolochia s.l. without gaining much consensus, it seems appropriate to move those few species of Isotrema to their equivalents in Aristolochia. - Isotrema is meanwhile listed as accepted by Catalogue of Life (World Plants) and by GBIF, but not yet by POWO. Thiotrix (talk) 15:59, 20 March 2026 (UTC)
- Thus, it is a classic disputed taxon and logically needs it own page as do its species equivalences in Aristolochia s.l. I do not think that POWO will accept the segregation, but you could ask for an opinion, as I did a few years ago. Andyboorman (talk) 16:06, 20 March 2026 (UTC)
