  • It's worth noting that Dunal (1852) used only the formal ranks of section and subsection, with up to three unnamed ranks below his subsections. Knapp (2013) lists authorship of the unranked name as "(Moench) Dunal" while doing the same for Dunal's autonymic subsection. Dunal gives no authorship attribution for his infrageneric names, but it is invalid under IPNI for what is the same name to exist at two different ranks in the same taxonomy, which is what this attribution would result in. Treating Solanum [unranked] Dulcamara as a new name and assigning the stat. nov. to the subsection seems more sensible.
