Excluded names
  • Solanum ptycanthum sensu non Dunal (1852) = S. americanum
    Mill.
    • After this species began to be treated as separate from Solanum americanum, S. ptycanthum was the most common name recognized over the forgotten S. emulans. In addition to S. emulans being the older name, S. ptycanthum is now considered a synonym of S. americanum.

Note: Often considered as a synonym of Solanum alatum Moench, Methodus: 474 (1794), nom. cons. {Govaerts et al. 2022)
