Summary

Description

Caloplaca nivalis (Körber) Th. Fr.

Image location: Gold Creek Trail near Snoqualmie Pass, Washington, USA

On Andreaea on Si rock in talus in open at ≈1070m elevation

best photos I could find – http://www.stridvall.se/lichens/gallery/Caloplaca?page=19

considered very rare, particularly at latitudes south of Canada, but was locally abundant where I found it

Used references: Thomson, J.W. (1997) American Arctic Lichens, 2. The Microlichens; Smith, C.W., Aptroot, A., Coppins, B.J., Fletcher, A., Gilbert, O.L., James, P.W. and Wolseley, P.A. (2009) The Lichens of Great Britain and Ireland; McCune’s key Caloplaca in Pacific Northwest, Revised July 2011 at http://people.oregonstate.edu/~mccuneb/Caloplaca.pdf;

Based on microscopic features: very distinctive spores for a Caloplaca, described in Smith et al. as “25-30 × 3-5 µm, narrowly ellipsoid, sometimes with a median indentation and then slipper-shaped, straight to curved, simple, occasionally with signs of a pseudoseptum” – see my photos; my spores extremely variable but average ≈ 23 × 4 µm
