Summary
DescriptionAsparagus aethiopicus fruit3 (11970781285).jpg | Introduced, warm-season, perennial shrub or scrambler, with sprawling stems to 2 m long; axillary spines are present; roots are fibrous and tuberous. Leaves are scale-like, with 2-5 linear 15-25 mm long cladodes (modified stems) in each axil. Flowerheads are racemes 4–10 cm long. Flowers are small and have 6 white to pinkish tepals. Fruits are globose green to red berries. Flowering is in spring and summer. A native of southern and eastern Africa, it is a weed of national significance in Australia. Persistent weed of urban bushland. It is shade tolerant and grows best in shaded areas where other vegetation has been removed. These photos were taken in the hind dunes at South West Rocks where Bitou Bush had been rampant. When the Bitou Bush was sprayed out, Asparagus Fern took over. Not sure which is worse. |
