Type species: Barbus hexazona Weber & de Beaufort, 1912
Etymology: Desmopuntius is made from the the Greek word δεσμψτης (desmotes, i.e. 'prisoner') and Puntius, referring to the barred pattern in clothing often associated with prisoners.
