Type locality: Hikurangi Trench off Hawke's Bay, North Island, 39°57.51'S, 170°10.88'E [1], 834-1109 m depth.

Etymology: Named in recognition of pioneer New Zealand shark taxonomist and biologist, Professor J. A. F. (Jack) Garrick, who has extensively researched the elasmobranchs of New Zealand, and was the first to recognize the genus from New Zealand waters.
