Diagnosis: Similis Acarosporae fuscescentis differt substantiis chimicis absentibus, disco dilatato, et paraphysibus 1 mm diametro.

Type: U.S.A. California: San Diego, 1883, C.R. Orcutt (holotype, FH 00197871, FH; isotype, ex Hb. C.E. Faxon, FH 00197872, FH).

Etymology: The species is named in honor of the California naturalist Charles Russell Orcutt (1864–1929).

Distribution: Only known from San Diego, California, in western North America.

Ecology: Acarospora orcuttii was collected on a fine sandy soil.
