The following discussion was from User talk:Arugula999 before it was redirected here. (The account was temporarily used while I was suppose to be retired.) You can edit this; it's not an archive.

Keep in mind that when using {{ITIS}}, when you are on genus or species page, you have to modify the coding slightly so that it display properly with italics (see [1]). OhanaUnitedTalk page 23:36, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

I see, thanks for pointing that out. Arugula999 23:37, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Interwikis

There was an interwiki bot (but just one and the only one), but don't know what happened now. It probably experienced a glitch and bot owner shut it down, or it just went down on its own. We create ALL navigation templates that are one level above the current page, since changing templates are faster than editing one page at a time. Imagine that we spelled a family name wrong and there are 20 genera underneath, and each genera has 5 species. With templates, all you need is make 1 modification, so good luck trying to edit 100 pages =) OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:36, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

We have much less hierarchy and bureaucracy here than Commons or en.wp. While we really should follow the abbreviation convention, we care more about creating articles. And if we later on decided to follow the strict abbreviation formatting, I can start my AWB bot again to change the formatting easily. In short, follow the formatting is trivial comparing to creating new pages. But of course, using good formatting when creating a new page never hurts. OhanaUnitedTalk page 20:35, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Distributions

It is because the admins are very "anal" about what goes on the main taxon pages, but there is more scope for creativity on the Discussion (Talk) pages. So, ask them why not on the main taxon pages ... Stho002 06:17, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Erica (Ericaceae)

Too many species? It's not our fault! Just kidding... add a header to each alphabet and use {{TOC}} immediately after the word "Species:". Put the species into the correct alphabet by their first letter. OhanaUnitedTalk page 16:19, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] (no heading - copied from user page)

I don't know what I have removed anymore. But normaly when I do lepidoptera or others in the references we refer to the original bulletin or book and not to ITIS or other sides. If you had make a link to an other side I have removed that and placed the book from Lamas as reference. Acassidy and I agree that we set up the Hesperioidea-Papilionoidea after Lamas and Mark Williams. If there are questions you can ask me for advise.PeterR 08:44, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Lepidoptera

You can do what you like to do. Alan accassidy and I work together after original books, bulletins. He works on the lycaenidae after Lamas and Williams. We found out that no other side is reliable. You want work with funet but that side is not reliable. The only sides in funet that are reliable are the Hesperioidea-Papilionoidea after Lamas and Williams. If you have questions about this i can help you.

[edit] Notodontidae

I'm now busy with the Notodontidae after Schintlmeister, 2008. I'm working after his book Palaearctic Macrolepidoptera 1: Notodontidae 15.11.2008. His divide of the Subfamiliae and Tribus are not the same as Fibiger 2006. So I set-up first the Notodontidae after Schintlmeister and then I send an e-mail to him about the status of Fibiger. After the Notodontidae I'm doing the bulletins of the Japanese Society and Tinea, 2008, Bulletin de la Société entomologique de France 2006, Lambillionea edition decembre 2008. So I don't work specific in a family. I know a reliable side where from you can add the genera and species. If you like to do that please e-mail me so we could confer with each other how to add this.

Regards,

PeterR 11:54, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Lepidoptera

The reliable side is www.Tortricidae.com. It is a side from John W.Brown author of many Tortricidae. We work together with each other about new species. If you start wiki with Tortricidae you find Subfamilies. If you open the first Subfamilia you see Tribus. If you open the first tribus you see the genera. You go to www.Tortricidae.com. You open the button with catalogue. Then you have the choice genus or species. You take genus and add the open genus from Wiki. You see in www.Tortricidae.com. The genus with author, year, type species and synonyms. You add this in Wiki. After that you open on the genus side in www.Tortricidae.com. the species. You add the species under species in Wiki. After this you can via www.tortricidae.com add specie for specie in Wiki. How its look in Wiki see a genus in blue. I copy a lot with control c in www.Tortricidae.com an with control V in Wiki. It is easy to complete the Wiki model. If you have done one I shall look to that genera and species in Wiki if all is done in accordance with the Wiki rules.

Peter

[edit] Aristocosma

I have update for you Aristocosma. Such it is now you can do the others. If you do now a new genus you can copy Aristocosma and changes the things for the new genus.

Regards,

PeterR 17:16, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Author

Each author have to be done in Author See templates Name.

I see you don't add the info by the species but if you do allso the species info then the genus is complete.

PeterR 17:49, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] References

Please add * Brown, John W., 2005, World Catalogue of Insects 5 to each genus and species till 2006.

PeterR 17:52, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Author names

What you say is correkt. There are mistakes in the Author names. Hbner = Hübner; Guene = Guenée etc.. I have allready e-mailed it to John W. Brown and they will change the Author names in the correct Author names. I think there is someone working that not known the alt-keys. John W. Brown send my e-mails with corrections to T.M. Gilligan. Not everybody is so involved as Stephen E. Thorpe doing the insecta in Wiki. If there are questions about Authors you can ask me.

[edit] Riodininae

Hi,

I see you have add under Incertae sedis the genus unassigned. That is wrong. Incertae sedis means unassigned. Under Incertae sedis comes directly the genera.

I didn't any thing in the Riodinae in the past month but i shall update the side.

PeterR 08:53, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Pseudoterpnini

Hi,

I don't have the just information to update this tribe. Maybe in autumn I can ask the library for more information and borrow books

[edit] Authors/dates

Authors and dates are important and meaningful for species, genus, and family-group names, but not higher. Adding Linnaeus, 1758 to Animalia is meaningless and pointless because there is no Code governing such names. Please spend your time more constructively, by adding more meaningful and substantial information to the Wiki. Thanks. Stho002 23:42, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

  • I'm just working on the principle that if a bit of information is meaningless and pointless, then editors ought to be spending their time adding info that is more useful. Lycaon is just using this to annoy me, so please keep out of it. Thanks Stho002 00:06, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Reply

shouldn't it be pleural? Maybe. When you see it on a taxon page, it looks like it sould be singular to me, e.g. Aderidae is a New Zealand Coleoptera familia, but it is pretty trivial, so I'm not changing it now. Categories seem to be under used at the moment, but I'm experimenting a little to see what use I can make of them. It isn't the first category for taxa, as there is also Disputed Taxa. Stho002 00:19, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Dirini or Dirina

I have a look too it

I have look too the classification of the Satyrinae. Alan Accassidy and I have an agreement to set up the Satyrinae after Gerardo Lamas and Mark C. Williams. (Atlas of Neotropical Lepidoptera; Checklist Part 4A; Hesperioidea-Papilionoidea and Checklist of Afrotropical Papilionoidea and Hesprioidea). So you can use the classification in funet. For genera in the other parts of the world i use Wahlberg and Alan do the Asian genera. I hope you can now further with your work.

If you have conflicts you can ask me or Accassidy for information.

[edit] Zizina

Hi Rocket000: I suggest you read the reference more carefully before making changes. Thanks, Stho002 00:31, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] images

Hi Rocket: one thing I hope we can agree on is that a reasonable photo of a reliably identified specimen, when available, replaces an old bad drawing. I can do reasonably good images, like Brontopriscus. I will try to do one of Alphitobius tomorrow. Cheers, Stho002 06:23, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

I am in a position at present (unless I get myself banned from here or other places that I rely on - Asperger's Syndrome can be a real bit%h sometimes!) to be able to take photographs of a broad range of New Zealand terrestrial invertebrates, particularly beetles. I won't win any photography awards, but they are sure better than some of the drawings, like that hideous Alphitobius drawing! However, I don't want to spend too much time on images when there are still hundreds of thousands of articles to be created on wikispecies, and more every day, particularly now that Zootaxa publishes 5 days a week. Cheers, Stho002 07:11, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Your are now an administrator

Congratulations! (I have nothing more interesting nor witty to say... please don't delete the Main Page, I guess?) Maxim(talk) 19:55, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Congrats! And you made your entrance with a big splash by mass-nuking crap useless templates. OhanaUnitedTalk page 05:58, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Wikispecies:Text of Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License

Can you help me make that page to mirror Wikipedia:Text of Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License? OhanaUnitedTalk page 02:05, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Meh, close enough... OhanaUnitedTalk page 22:26, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Template:VN

I tried to answer some editprotected request at Template talk:VN#gil mh. Normally I don't have trouble doing that, but this time the new templates just won't get loaded. Mind checking it out? OhanaUnitedTalk page 18:01, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Never mind, I forgot to do a purge. OhanaUnitedTalk page 02:43, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
According to the history, User:Open2universe created a rough skeleton of the template and looks very simple and easy to understandin the beginning.[2] Frankly, I have never seen any inline nor infobox VN. None of us here is an expert on templates or bots so we nearly always have to enlist the help from other projects. I do know that VN uses a 3 column format which presents a perennial problem. If some species have multiple common name or a super long name, some may spill over to second column where there is a big gap between each of the three columns. OhanaUnitedTalk page 03:29, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
But I like the current model more. When I went to Common's Aves page, there's just so many languages that made things really hard to find. Our current model works fine because a new language starts in a new column. Could we change the code without changing the result? OhanaUnitedTalk page 18:00, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
Currently, the template disregards the language order entered in the page. English will always display before French, and Chinese will display nearly (if not always) last. OhanaUnitedTalk page 17:41, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Very nice. Let's do it! OhanaUnitedTalk page 18:47, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
1 more thing, does that mean the talk page is now pretty much obsolete since all language codes are included? OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:53, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Eritina: reply

You may or may not have created the page by mistake, but it is inappropriate to delete it because it is a name in use (e.g., see http://tolweb.org/Eritina/70790), so people are likely to search for it. It should therefore be a redirect to Eritini. As for being a synonym of Eritini, these issues are complex, and I would appreciate it if you didn't edit pages that I have been editing very recently until I have had an opportunity to think it all through. Cheers, Stho002 07:52, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

But nobody can create an Eritina page unless your deletion of it is undone! I wanted to create an Eritina page because it is a name in use (e.g., see http://tolweb.org/Eritina/70790), and so ought to have a redirect page on Wikispecies. Thanks, Stho002 08:04, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
yes, I was just about to correct myself on that! I suppose I could have just recreated the page, rather than undeleted it, but undelete seemed natural as there wasn't a good reason to delete it in the first place! I don't see it as big issue though - amounts to the same thing ... Stho002 08:16, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
You are correct that it is NOT OK to add unpublished "stuff" (well, actually, the boundary is a bit fuzzy), but Eritina is OK on a technicality, even if you are correct that there are no strictly published instances of the name. A family group name created with one rank is automatically created at all ranks, according to the Code. So, in fact, Eritoidea is a synonym of Noctuoidea, even if the name Eritoidea has never been actually used! Stho002 08:27, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
I don't see a problem here: if people are likely to search for Eritina, after seeing the TOL page, then the search should lead them to the appropriate Wikispecies page by redirection ... Stho002 08:49, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Flood flag

Seems like S.J. changed a lot of pages without consensus. I'm going to revert with flood (bot) flag on. Want to help me on the reverts? I can temporary grant you the flag so it doesn't flood RC. OhanaUnitedTalk page 23:09, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Don't hurry, let's discuss... I have changed only 5-7 pages... The rest effect of the enclosed templates... S.J. 23:13, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] .js

Hi, does your script test.js work good? I'm looking for something like this. Ark (talk page) 15:14, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

I'd like to try not only regexp search and replace, but "highlight redirects" and "customize sidebar" sections too, but copying your monobook.js to mine .js it is not enough, i don't know why? Excuse me my English. I'm using FF, I've change my user preferences to english, refresh cache, and I can't see any difference in edit box. What is wrong? Ark (talk page) 21:05, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
Now, I understood the "tab" meaning :) It works. Regards, Ark (talk page) 21:32, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Template:image

Thank you for this template, very useful. I wonder if you could alter it so it allow additional text? Sometimes I would prefer to add a little remark, or when let's say using an species-image on a generic page. Epibase 15:48, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Deep bow..... Epibase 10:15, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
