Welcome to Wikispecies!

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome! I don't think it's your fault, but the bot added Agna[1] which is an Italian town, not a species... OhanaUnitedTalk page 13:01, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My bot just follows the links NinjaBot added before! Seems NinjaBot was looking on all wikis with the option "-same". I do not do so currently, but shall I in future? Just following (manually added) links would just be more accurate, as you see. --- Best regards, Melancholie 13:54, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I suppose I shouldn't be complaining about bugs in the 1st place, since I invited you over to help us out. OhanaUnitedTalk page 02:57, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do you generally add interwiki links manually on page creations? With a bot to do it automatically (and autonomous) it would require to do it like NinjaBot, unfortunately. --- Best regards, Melancholie 05:18, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes... Very often, we have new users here who don't even know how to use templates, let alone interwiki links. Recently, we got specialist such as PeterR (butterfly and moth), 130.216.1.16 (insects), Meneerke bloem (botanist), and a few more that I can't think of their name at the moment. For those who have a bit more experience, we usually include interwiki links before clicking on "save page". Things are a lot quieter here. We don't have 10 year old kids jumping around, talking about pokemon, their girlfriends, or leaving a suicide note. Personally, I like this kind of atmosphere more than Wikipedia. Running a bot with option "-same" should be perfect for 2+ word terms like Cymbopogon flexuosus, but gathering links for one word terms like Agna that do not yet have interwikis will be problematic. Question in those cases is whether it should be done by my bot autonomously anyway, or whether it should be done by others manually (maybe bot assisted). That's a question for the future, as my bot currently is running in "follow" mode only, just following/adding links for pages that already have interwikis. --- Best regards, Melancholie 17:06, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'll keep an eye if the bot breaks, but for now it can be automatic because it's not a really big deal if it breaks. OhanaUnitedTalk page 05:11, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bot linking[edit]

I have never seen a bot doing tasks like adding links from articles to Commons or Wikispecies. I think the general process is they are added by humans (volunteers). You know, your idea is great! It is no longer wikispecies -> wikipedia, but now it's wikipedia -> wikispecies. We could definitely take more traffic to improve the project. Even though it has never been done before, I don't think you will be breaking any rules because according to en.wp guideline on Wikimedia sister projects, such links are encouraged. All you need is file a request for bot approval (yah, it's a longer process with more bureaucracy inside) and you should be good to go. OhanaUnitedTalk page 15:40, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is a way. You can extract the species name from taxobox in Wikipedia and match it with Wikispecies. Since sometimes, page name is not latin name but a common English name, Latin name eliminates any doubt except synonyms (but they are easy to address. Since it uses information in taxobox, it won't add link in Agna (village). There is a very rare chance that 2 genus shares same name but in different domain (e.g. one in animal and the other is plant/fungi), but it's really rare and can be picked up manually. Scientists around the world are aware of this problem and won't create more identical genus names. They still exist because they were named in 1800s when communication is very poor. Anyhow, back to topic. If the extracted Latin species name in Wikipedia = page name in Wikispecies, then it's a match and template can be added on Wikipedia. If not, just skip and no harm done.
You don't have to worry about being the first in the area to do similar tasks. It has been done before by User:Polbot. It creates articles, which are potentially more dangerous than adding a wrong sister project link. You can find more about how Polbot did it at User:Polbot/older tasks. I have been looking for bot owners to help us create articles here, because Polbot has published the source code too to simplify our lives. If you are interested to create articles for Wikispecies instead of adding interproject links, that's totally fine too. Any help towards improving or raising the awareness of our project are appreciated regardless of its nature. OhanaUnitedTalk page 16:54, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Interwiki[edit]

Why did Your bot stopped adding them? --Arachn0 (talk) 05:21, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
