Gtk-dialog-info.svg Welcome to Wikispecies, Ed Uebel!

We like having new people contributing to Wikispecies. Here are a few things that may be interesting:

  • If you haven't done so, we strongly recommend you to create an account. Creating account is quick and free, plus it provides you more features such as preferences and the ability to keep a watchlist to track changes made to articles that interest you.
  • Have a look at Done and to do.
  • Help:Contents provides a good introduction to editing Wikispecies.
  • Templates are there to help you following syntax and formatting rules.

Please ask further questions in the Village Pump.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at the Wikimedia Commons.

We hope you'll enjoy the time you spend on Wikispecies!

You can sign your messages with ~~~~.

[edit] Thanks for working on lichenologists

You are certainly finding quite a few. That is great. One minor point: the section for links should be External links not External Links (no capitalization of links). Not a big deal. Open2universe 20:52, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Adding synbols above vowels

Is your question how do add them? This will depend on your computer and keyboard. I often copy and paste. Otherwise, there are usually combinations of Alt-codes that can produce them. en:Alt codes. Here is a reference for Windows Windows alt-codes. Open2universe 13:44, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Work in progress

Hi. Could you please use the show preview button before you commit your final contribution? Every time you save a page, that version is stored on the server and takes a bit of space. Maybe you could develope/write your contributions off line and upload them when complete. Thanks Lycaon 10:38, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Authors

Answered on my talk page and on Wikispecies_talk:Policy. Lycaon 13:58, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

BTW, Please add new discussions at the bottom of a discussion page , not at the top. Thanks Lycaon 13:58, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Author abbreviations

Good question. Wikispecies has been using IPNI for botanist abbreviations and they also do not use spaces. IPNI

So that is what I use for official abbreviation. In the animal world they seem to use spaces more.

That being said, I often create redirects with spaces because other people entered them that way.

[edit] Books

Please add information on books to wikipedia, not to wikispecies and link accordingly. Thanks. Lycaon 12:43, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Does this answer your question about subcategories? We really don't want books on wikispecies. For some people even adding the links to authorities was a stretch.

Also please review Help:Author_Names. It is not entirely complete and can use some enhancing. Feel free to add discussion to the talk page. The basic concept is that we want as little information here as possible and point people to the various wikipedias. Open2universe

[edit] Formatting

Please have a look at this on how to format references and vernacular names. Thanks. Lycaon 23:51, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you :-) Lycaon 00:23, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Subsp, var, etc

Hi Ed. Subspecies and varieties should have their own level and shouldn't be mixed within the species level. Could you have a look into that with Cladonia? Check the Recent changes for more guidance. Cheers. Lycaon 07:25, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Needs some more work. Your formatting does not comply at the moment. Have a look at e.g. Opegrapha_multiseptata. A Species should mention all its lower taxa but not be a redirect. Don't hesitate to ask if you have problems. Lycaon 10:42, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
You should also use these templates. Lycaon 10:50, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Catalog:Taxon Authorities

I see you are adding a lot of lichenologists. Would you mind also adding them to Catalog:Taxon Authorities? Thanks. Open2universe 13:31, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cladonia

One day soon they will be finished... ;-)) And then...? Keep up the good work. Lycaon 13:58, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Asterisks

Hi. Why are you creating those redirects with the asterisks (*) ? Lycaon 18:27, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Hmm. I'm not too sure on how to proceed on this. can we get a second (and third) opinion? I'll put it on the Village Pump later today, if you don't mind. Lycaon 20:24, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Flavoparmelia caperata

Some questions about the proposed expanded format at Flavoparmelia caperata:

  1. Why can't most of that information be included on the English Wikipedia?
  2. If Wikispecies is supposed to be as language-independent (i.e. Latin-based) as possible, how will for example, the "Description" section, be expanded when someone wants to translate it into Japanese?
  3. Does an expanded format increase the likelihood of newcomers mistaking Wikispecies for a species-centered Wikipedia and therefore attempting to put more blocks of prose here? --Georgeryp 16:28, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] References and Vernacular names

Hi, thanks for all your work. Would you also please add vernacular names below the reference section? And if the original reference is listed, would you make sure that is first?

Thanks again. --Open2universe | Talk 14:53, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Please improve your edits.

Please instead of writing:

Thanks for your contributions!

[edit] Arthonia varians var. varians

Did you mean to remove this from Arthonia varians? It is now orphaned. Same with Arthonia vinosa var. vinosa being removed from Arthonia vinosa. If they are not valid, can we delete them? --Open2universe | Talk 02:35, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Request for comment

There is presently a discussion on the use of daggers to denote extinct taxa. This will affect a large portion of the pages in wikispecies as the project grows so if possible please read the contributions so far and comment. Thanks --Kevmin 07:07, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Cercyonis page

Thank you for the suggestions. They were very helpful. Meganmccarty 16:16, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Telotrema

Ed,

Sofar i know belongs Telotrema to the family Gyliauchenidae. I want add more genera to Gyliauchenidae but i don't know how to do that. If i look to Digenea there are several classes. I sent you herewith an abstract from Zootaxa [1]
