[edit] How to use this checklist

This checklist covers selected groups of organisms from New Zealand, and may eventually be comprehensive for all groups. A simplified classification is used (Kingdom/Phylum/Class/Order/Family/Genus/species), except that a few groups may be broken down using further categories. Species are not listed on this page. Endemic taxa are marked with an asterisk (*). Clicking on an endemic genus will link to a genus page containing all and only New Zealand species (for present purposes, a genus counts as endemic if it has no extralimitally native described species). Clicking on a non-endemic genus will link to a genus page with (eventually) all the N.Z. species listed under 'New Zealand' in the 'Distribution' section of the genus discussion page. References are cited on the linked taxon pages which are intended to justify the information provided on these pages. It is up to the user to verify the information provided against the references. A '+' at the end of a genus list indicates the possible existence of additional undescribed and/or unidentified genera, and/or that a generic revision is badly needed. Adventive taxa whose establishment in N.Z. is very doubtful are not included.
'New Zealand' is herein defined as the New Zealand subregion of the Australian (biogeographical) region, i.e, including North, South, Stewart, Kermadecs, Three Kings, Chathams, Snares, Antipodes, Bounty, Auckland, and Campbell Islands, but excluding Norfolk, Lord Howe, and Macquarie Islands.
Completion and reliability (on this page): sections are added with complete family lists only. Generic lists are complete when added. Putatively complete lists are as reliable as the compiler is able to provide on the date of the most recent page revision. Pages in red are not yet written.
IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION: the genera listed below link to the corresponding Wikispecies genus page (if one is written), which takes us OUT of the New Zealand context. These genus pages have not necessarily been edited by me yet. As I say above, EVENTUALLY the New Zealand species (for non-endemic genera) will be listed on the associated Discussion page for each genus, but until that is done nothing can be inferred about which species are present in New Zealand.
