[edit] Eukaryota vs Eukarya

So is this Eukaryota or Eukarya? 5 July 2005 16:42 (UTC)

It's both, and a few other names as well. 19:20, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
So, as a Science Editor, when should I use the one, and when the other? --196.218.103.7 22:17, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

They are synonyms, or at least today. Historically they have been used by different authors to cover two different taxonomical systems. Eukaryota and Prokaryota was used in a 2 (super)kingdom system, while Eukarya, Archaea, Bacteria was used in a 3 (super)kingdom system. The actual coverage of Eukarya/Eukaryota was always (more or less) equal though. --Kempm 22:57, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Explanation

  • Protista — Single celled eukaryotes that don't fit into the other categories, including slime molds, kelp and eukaryotic algae
  • Fungi — Includes molds, mushrooms and yeast
  • Plantae — Photosynthetic, producing embryos, containing chloroplasts, having cellulose cell walls
  • Animalia — All animals (multicellular, can move, consume food, and develop as an embryo)

[edit] Description

Although separate divisioning schemes classify it differently, Eukarya is in general a broad category that tends to include many organisms such as animals, plants, fungi and protists. All eukaryote cells possess a nucleus to hold the DNA, and may possess other cell organelles that prokaryotic (lacking membrane-bound nuclei) cells do not have.

[edit] References

Could someone move the reference section to bottom of the article? It looks littlebit strange when it is in middle of article. Thanks. --85.77.250.185 08:14, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Since the vernacular name lists can get very long here, having the reference section precede it is by design. See How a taxon page content should be structured. --Georgeryp 22:02, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
