A genus of tropical cactus, sometimes called "Moon Cactus" due to their slightly flattened spherical shape. Because of this shape, the scientific epitaph comes from the ancient Greek "diskos", for disc.

The Discocacti are endemic to central parts of South America, in a region near the contiguous borders of southern Brazil, eastern Bolivia, and northern Paraguay. The genus is highly prized by collectors around the world, who cultivate them due to their highly fragrant, showy, nocturnal flowers, and relatively compact size. However, the various species are at this time in critical danger of extinction in the wild.

Discocactus are not to be confused with the distantly related, and more common, Disocactus (note the slight difference in spelling) of Mexico, and South America.
