Name[edit]

Holotype: CSIRO H 2903-01. Paratypes: CAS 213820 (1); CSIRO H 635-02 (1), H 3863-01(2), H 3903-02 (claspers), H 4131-01 (1), H 5284-05 (parts saved), H 5478-01 (1), H 5585-02 (right clasper); IPMB 38.01.04 (1); NTM S 10765-002 (1).

Type locality: Northwest of Weipa, Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, Australia, 12°08'S, 139°58'E, 46 meters depth.[1]

Note: Specimen CSIRO H5284.05, a female 805 mm disc width from the Kota Kinabalu fish market was subsequently identifed as of a cryptic species initially confused with H. leoparda and described as Himantura tutul. Now paratype of H. tutul.
