On a sunny day after days of rain, many wasps were out foraging. This one proudly wears the distinctive uniform of the southern yellowjacket. These predatory wasps are ferocious defenders of their nest but are perfectly amiable while out hunting (as long as you don't poke them or tell wasp jokes). The adults feed on nectar and fluids while the larva eat "masticated arthropods" or scavenged meat collected by the adults. This one is on Pluchea odorata at Juno Dunes Natural Area (south trail).
