Introduced, cool-season, annual or biennial grass to 60 cm tall; sometimes rhizomatous; stems stout, erect to ascending. Leaves have loose sheaths which are villous on the margins. Ligules are obtuse, laciniate and to 5 mm long. Blades are to 5 mm wide and villous. Flowerheads are panicles 3.5–20 cm long, usually compact, especially near the top; pedicels are usually about 5 mm long. Spikelets are mostly 9–20 mm long, mostly erect, the lowermost sometimes slightly drooping. Lemmas are 5–11 mm long; awns, if present, are to 3 mm long. Flowering is in spring and early summer. A native of South America, it grows in disturbed areas (e.g. sheep camps), especially on granitic soils.
